  1. They’re part of the allium family, alongside onions, garlic, and chives, which explains their mild, sweet flavour.
  2. Packed with nutrition: leeks are rich in vitamin K, vitamin C, folate, and fibre, supporting bone health and digestion.
  3. Ancient popularity: Leeks were a favourite of the Roman Emperor Nero, who ate them regularly for his voice (earning him the nickname “Porrophagus” – leek eater!).
  4. They grow tall! Some prize leeks can grow to over a metre in length and weigh several kilos, making them a gardener’s pride.
